First Friday in December

On Friday, December 6, 2019 more than 650 youth and adults came together for a neighborhood celebration of the season at Kennedy Heights Arts Center. The festive, free event held in both our main building and annex included a tree lighting, student performances, live music, craft activities, art exhibit, open studios with local artists, food and drink.

Winterfest was started in 2004 by local residents as a way to bring together people in Kennedy Heights and Pleasant Ridge, and nurture a sense of community. Sponsored by the Kennedy Heights Community Council, Pleasant Ridge Community Council and Kennedy Heights Arts Center, with support from Guardian Savings Bank, the popular annual event has grown through the years to become a treasured neighborhood tradition.

2019 was the largest attended ever and reflected the diversity of our neighborhoods. Inclusive traditions like Winterfest do more than provide fun, free cultural activities for families. They shape community identity, create vibrancy, and strengthen relationships between neighbors.

“Having events like this brings everyone out and together.”

- Resident

Winterfest highlights and celebrates the talents of local residents. The 2019 event featured performances and exhibtions by:

• CPS Elementary Jazz Academy

• Woodford Strings Orchestra

• Kennedy Heights Presbyterian Church choir

• Kennedy Artist Collective

• Local artists in KHAC studios

• Eric Armstrong, videographer

Many businesses, community institutions and residents have donated money, time and their creative energy to make Winterfest a reality. Winterfest is coordinated by a committee representing about 10 different community institutions and organizations.

The entire evening is intended to be a welcoming and inclusive invitation to all living in the surrounding neighborhoods to continue building the spirit of community during this holiday season. Events are free of charge.
